Most AI chatbots today are smart but come with a hidden cost – your privacy. They save what you ask, learn from it, and keep your chats on their servers. This means your private talks are not really private.

But Proton, the company behind Proton Mail, has made something different. They’ve launched Lumo, an AI assistant that does not treat you like a product.

Lumo can do many things: write emails, summarise documents, help with coding, and answer your questions. But here’s why it’s special – it keeps your chats only with you. They use something called zero-access encryption. This means even Proton can’t see your chats. Only you can read them.

Lumo does not save any logs on its servers. If you want, you can also use Ghost Mode, which deletes your chat forever once you close it.

They made Lumo with open-source AI models and keep it on Proton’s European servers. So your chats don’t go to the US or China. This is great for privacy.

Lumo is different from other AI assistants like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, or Microsoft Copilot. Other AI assistants save your chats on their servers, but Lumo doesn’t do that. While others use your chats to train their AI models, Lumo never does this. Most AI companies may share your data with advertisers or third parties, but Lumo never shares anything because it can’t even see your chats. If you want Lumo to search the web, it uses privacy-friendly search engines, and this feature is off by default to keep you safe. You can also use Lumo without an account if you want quick and easy privacy.

If you use the free version, you can ask only a limited number of questions each week. For unlimited use, bigger file uploads, and longer chat history, there’s Lumo Plus for $12.99 per month.

So what’s the big deal? Lumo shows that an AI can help you without spying on you. If you often ask private questions, work with legal or health documents, or care about privacy, Lumo is made for you.
